Related Stage 4/5 outcomes: SC4-4WS, SC5-4WS

Content

  • Students question and predict by:
  • asking questions about familiar objects and events
  • identifying questions that can be investigated scientifically
  • predicting the outcomes of an investigation using background knowledge, experience and/or scientific understanding CCT

Planning investigations

Outcomes

A student:

  • SCLS-5WS

participates in planning to investigate questions or problems

Related Stage 4/5 outcomes: SC4-5WS, SC5-5WS

Content

  • Students plan investigations by:
  • suggesting suitable methods for gathering data, including practical investigations and research, using secondary sources N
  • identifying scientific equipment and materials, and their purposes
  • identifying safety rules when using scientific equipment and materials in an investigation WE
  • working individually and/or collaboratively to record aspects of their plan PSCWE
  • recognising variables to be changed, kept the same and measured in an investigation

Conducting investigations

Outcomes

A student:

  • SCLS-6WS

participates in an investigation by following a sequence

Related Stage 4/5 outcomes: SC4-6WS, SC5-6WS

Content

  • Students conduct investigations by:
  • using a range of techniques including practical experiences, surveysfieldwork and research to gather data and information, using digital technologies as appropriate ICTN
  • selecting and using appropriate equipment, measuring tools and methods to make accurate observations and measurements N
  • working individually and/or collaboratively to participate in an investigation PSCWE
  • making adjustments when necessary to a planned method for an investigation
  • following safety rules when using equipment and tools in an investigation WE
  • recording observations and measurements, using appropriate units and abbreviations LN

Processing and analysing data and information

Outcomes

A student:

  • SCLS-7WS

collects, records and interprets data and information

Related Stage 4/5 outcomes: SC4-7WS, SC5-7WS

Content

  • Students process and analyse data and information by:
  • selecting the most appropriate method to organise and display data and information NCCT
  • interpreting data and information gathered N
  • relating data and information gathered, to questions and predictions CCT
  • drawing conclusions from data and information gathered in an investigation CCT
  • reflecting on the strengths and limitations of their investigation PSC
  • using their conclusions to identify further questions that may be investigated scientifically

Problem solving

Outcomes

A student:
