Comparing length

Description of activity

Students choose five objects of different length from things found in the classroom. They compare the lengths of the objects. Students demonstrate or explain how the lengths of the objects were compared and draw a picture to record their results.

The suggested time for this activity is 30 minutes.

Context

Students have had experience comparing the lengths of objects and using appropriate everyday language (eg short, shorter than, longer than, the same as, wide, tall, thin). They have had practice comparing lengths directly by placing objects side-by-side and aligning the ends. Students have traced objects and recorded atheir findings informally.

Outcomes

MAe-1WM describes mathematical situations using everyday language, actions, materials and informal recordings
MAe-3WM uses concrete materials and/or pictorial representations to support conclusions
MAe-9MG describes and compares lengths and distances using everyday language

 

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.) Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • compare the lengths of objects
  • use everyday language to describe length
  • record their results by drawing a picture
