Informative Text - Recount
Description of activity
Students listen to the reading of a picture book such as The Hidden Forest by Jeannie Baker, The Adventures of Bert by Allan Ahlberg, Alexander’s Outing by Pamela Allen, Arthur’s Lost and Found by Marc Brown or The Cocky, the Crow and the Hawk by Christine Nicholls. They predict what the story will be about based on the cover. Students discuss the events and illustrations in the book. They write a recount of the story.
Students have been exposed to a range of literature and have discussed the elements of a story. They have predicted events in stories by drawing on their background experience and making connections to other texts. Students were then asked to respond to the text by writing a recount of the key events of the story.
Criteria for assessing learning
(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- plan, structure and construct a recount of the events in a picture book
- spell familiar words
- use basic grammatical features and punctuation appropriate for an informative text in the form of a recount.
