Stage 1 - Activity 4

Informative Text - Recount

Description of activity

Students listen to the reading of a picture book such as The Hidden Forest by Jeannie Baker, The Adventures of Bert by Allan Ahlberg, Alexander’s Outing by Pamela Allen, Arthur’s Lost and Found by Marc Brown or The Cocky, the Crow and the Hawk by Christine Nicholls. They predict what the story will be about based on the cover. Students discuss the events and illustrations in the book. They write a recount of the story.

Context

Students have been exposed to a range of literature and have discussed the elements of a story. They have predicted events in stories by drawing on their background experience and making connections to other texts. Students were then asked to respond to the text by writing a recount of the key events of the story.

Outcomes

EN1-2A plans, composes and reviews a small range of simple texts for a variety of purposes on familiar topics for known readers and viewers
EN1-4A draws on an increasing range of skills and strategies to fluently read, view and comprehend a range of texts on less familiar topics in different media and technologies
EN1-5A uses a variety of strategies, including knowledge of sight words and letter–sound correspondences, to spell familiar words
EN1-7B identifies how language use in their own writing differs according to their purpose, audience and subject matter
EN1-9B uses basic grammatical features, punctuation conventions and vocabulary appropriate to the type of text when responding to and composing texts
EN1-10C thinks imaginatively and creatively about familiar topics, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts

Criteria for assessing learning

(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:

  • plan, structure and construct a recount of the events in a picture book
  • spell familiar words
  • use basic grammatical features and punctuation appropriate for an informative text in the form of a recount.
